From South Africa to anywhere and everywhere else, Chris Erasmus has made a splash in the country music scene. His unique sound, crafted from years of travel and experience, takes a more introspective approach. As of last Friday, Chris had nine singles to his name. He just recently made it a perfect ten with his release of NeverPlanned, an exploration of the darker side of what “coming home” can look like.

It’s no secret that Erasmus is well traveled. With his ties to South Africa, the United Kingdom, and, recently, the country music scene of Nashville, Tennessee, Chris Erasmus draws upon many different areas of influence. His latest single, released last Friday, is one of the darker of his works. It wrestles with the illusion that our minds create of the past and our homes. We often idealize what it looked like and wish to return to what we once were, but neither our homes or ourselves will ever truly be the same.

“Take me back,” the hook and cry of Erasmus in the chorus, is the driving force behind the song. The clever play on words, NeverPlanned, blends childish themes of Never Neverland with mature themes of longing and wishing for who we once were. There is something to be said about the dichotomy of past and present, and Erasmus artistically explores this idea. Chris Erasmus has shown us the dagger in his heart, and has invited us to stab it into our own.
