Offset Avoids Criminal Assault Charge

On March 13th, 2025, Offset was arrested for the alleged assault of a Los Angeles security guard at a MedMen cannabis dispensary. 

Offset was initially charged with misdemeanor assault, to which he pleaded not guilty, and his defense lawyer had engaged in months of legal proceedings with the prosecution until recently. On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, a California state judge issued a diversion order in the case, allowing him to avoid criminal conviction if he completes 50 hours of community service, anger management classes, and 12 months of probation. If he completes these requirements, the criminal charge will be completely dismissed. 

The Migos rapper, legally named Kiari Cephus, had initially asked for a six-month period, which the judge doubled at the hearing on July 15th. Offset did not appear at this hearing. 

There has been no legal determination regarding what occurred on March 13th, and both sides have vastly different accounts. 

According to the prosecution, Offset refused to provide any form of ID at the MedMen dispensary, repeatedly asking the security guard, “Do you know who I am?” Prosecutors claim that he then proceeded to shove the security guard by the vest, punch him in the left cheek, and flee the scene after being pepper sprayed. 

According to the defense, the prosecution's story was ridiculous and the security guard initiated the disagreement. They also claimed that the security guard was just seeking a payday and only called an ambulance after being told that Offset was famous. They claimed that he was laughing with coworkers moments before doing so. 

The case will remain open while Offset completes the court-ordered diversion program. Upon successful completion, the misdemeanor assault charge will be dismissed.
