Thundercat, known for his unique and instantly recognizable bass lines and infectious rhythms, is set to release his sixth studio album (If you include Drank as an album). This will be the first time in 6 years that he would have released an album.
The last one he released was all the way back in the year that everyone looks back on fondly: 2020. It was, in an unintentional way, called "It Is What It Is". Pretty telling of the times! But back to the music, fans have waited in anticipation for Thundercat to roar back onto the scene.
Thundercat first got his start all the way back in 2011 when he released his first ever studio album called, "The Golden Age of Apocalypse". This was a strong start for Thundercat as it sits at an 80% score on Metacritic. Thundercat introduced the world to his signature bass tone with his Ibanez TCB1006 bass. He effortlessly blended Jazz, Fusion, Soul and Electronic elements into his sound.
He would release another album in 2013, make appearances on albums like To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar and a host of other projects. But it wasn't until 2017 when he would release "Drunk" where everything changed.
The hit single off that album called, "Them Changes", blew up all over the internet and was quickly implemented into meme formats across the internet. It was also praised for its groovy bass line and catchy vocal melody.
This would catapult Thundercat into stratum where he would start to collaborate with a host of artists after his success with "Them Changes". One notable person he collabed with was Mac Miller, but more on that later. He would release his most recent album, the previously mentioned "It Is What It Is". But ever since then, nothing.
Well, not entirely. He would continue to collaborate with huge artists like The Weeknd, Silk Sonic and other super stars, laying down funky, groovy and irresistible bass lines.
But fans finally got what they wanted when Thundercat announced his newest project, "Distracted. To promote the album, he released two singles and an EP called "Thunderwave".
On this EP, he collaborated with artists like Tame Impala, WILLOW, Lil Yachty, Flying Lotus, and the late, great Mac Miller. All of these songs sound like vintage Thundercat from the avant garde sounds and beats on the track to Thundercat's instantly recognizable bass line and soothing vocals.
Overall, this is looking to be a great album. But fans must wait until Friday to see if Thundercat can follow up his previous successes.
