Famed Indie/Art Rock/Alternative artist Mitski is getting ready to release her release her eighth studio album called, "Nothing's About to Happen To Me." Mitski's iconic softer sound mixed with the occasional indie rock style songs made her a star who currently has around 22 million monthly streams on Spotify. I would assume that number will only grow after this new release, which will be her first studio album in 3 years since her last one back in 2023 called, "The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We."
Mitski first got her start back in 2012 while she was at school for music. She would self release two albums. One in 2012 called "Lush" and in 2013 "Retired from Sad, New Career in Business". These albums were more orchestral/piano driven songs that don't match her current sound. It wasn't until in 2014 when she changed her sound to a more indie rock sound with her breakout album, "Bury Me at Makeout Creek".
She would then release a song in 2018 called, "Washing Machine Heart", which currently sits in second place of her most listened songs with around 1.1 billion streams. First place is a song from her most recently released album in 2023 called, "My Love Mine All Mine". That song blew up all over TikTok and Instagram and sits at 1.8 billion streams.
But after she released her last album in 2023, she has been pretty quiet, which feels like a recent trend with a lot of artists going silent for years and then suddenly announcing an album and then releasing it two weeks later. But Mitski fans are not complaining about this! She gave her fans a taste of her new album by releasing two new singles in "Where's My Phone" and "I'll Change For You" which she released on February 3, 2026.
"Where's My Phone" has more of the indie rock vibe of Mitski with a mix of art rock and alternative. Her more monotone vocals accompany the rock guitars strumming away the power chords with a touch of distortion.
The other song, "I'll Change For You", is a complete 180 from "Where's My Phone". This leans more into the jazzy, softer vibe of her earlier works. This song is more down to earth and emotional with her singing about her love for someone that she has already seperated from. She drives that point home with her vocals sounding depressing and the soft, jazz instrumentation in the background leads us in that direction.
Fans are eagerly awaiting to see how this new album will add to Mitski's legacy.
